Wait: We have GSMO council representatives?

Governments in general may get a bad rap for being big and impersonal. Your 2017-2018 GSMO council, however, wants to get up close and personal. With all of you.

Don’t worry. We’re not buying you matching snuggies and hats (unless, of course, you really want that). We’re just trying to make your GSMO experience more engaging and interactive by putting an actual face to your membership.

This spring, you voted in the first-ever GSMO Council election, and you elected five of your social peers to serve as GSMO advisers and community ambassadors. (If you missed the memo: Austin Ellington, Katie Nelson, Nicole Nolen, Jen Snyder and myself (Bronlea Mishler) are honored and excited to be your 2017-2018 council.)

This year, we want to be more than just the people who help plan GSMCON2018. We want to make sure you get the most bang for your GSMO membership buck. We want you to have a personal contact if you have questions, or need advice, or want to suggest that GSMO host a regional workshop or webinar.

We decided the most equitable way to represent our GSMO members would be to divvy up the responsibility. Five councilmembers. 50 states. The math worked out nicely.

Each councilmember is responsible for her (or his) home state plus nine other states. We tried to group them geographically, but with three of us living on the West Coast, we had to get creative. Nicole has most of the Southeast; Austin has the southern Midwest; Bronlea has the PNW (mostly); and Jen and Katie are sharing the Southwest and Northeast-ish regions.  For reference, we’ve made this helpful color-coded map.

So. What does this mean for you?

First – and most importantly – you have your very own GSMO representative! If you haven’t already, you’ll get an introductory email from your council rep. File that away in case you need to get in touch with us. We’ll also reach out throughout the year to share GSMO-related news, or pick your brain on ideas for GSMCON2018.

Mainly, we want to be a resource for you. Need a brilliant idea? Shoot us an email or tweet. Got a colleague interested in joining GSMO? Let us know – we’d love to chat with them. Something you’d like to see at GSMCON2018? We’re all ears.

We’re excited to get to know you all better!
